Anoka County Library Minute

Further Reading:

April 22nd is Earth Day, and in the spirit of the day, I’d like to highlight a few ways in which using a library can be environmentally friendly. One could certainly make the case that the general concept of a library is in and of itself eco-friendly because it’s based on the sharing of community resources. But, I want to highlight two library collections in particular for their potential to reduce waste– the Kitchen Collection and the Discover Kits.

The Kitchen Collection consists of over a hundred specialty bakeware and cooking gadgets available for checkout. There’s a wide variety of cake and muffin pans in different shapes and sizes, as well as a food processor, popcorn maker, fondue pot, canning set, and sushi making kit, just to name a few. The Kitchen Collection items are housed at the Centennial library, but can be requested for pick-up to any Anoka County Library location.

Each Discover Kit is essentially a hobby-in-a-box. Included with the basic starting materials are instructions and/or books to help you get started. Some examples of kits include woodburning, podcasting, pickleball, pressing flowers, microscope, and more. If you’re thinking about taking up a hobby but don’t want to commit to buying the materials needed, try out one of our Discover Kits.

These collections help reduce waste because they allow cardholders to try before buying, or even try instead of buying.
