Main Street: While the current Bethel boundaries incorporated as a village in 1913, when Bethel township was organized in 1857 it spanned all of current day Bethel, East Bethel and part of Linwood.

James Cooper picked the name “Bethel” from the Bible and named the township when it was first organized.
In 1903, Lemuel Robinson owned the first automobile in the village, a “Mitchell.” His brother, William Robinson, soon followed by purchasing a “Queen” car and used it to deliver groceries around the village.
Before electric refrigeration, residents harvested ice from local Sandshore Lake, also known as Wicklander Lake, in the western part of the village. If stored in insulated storage barns and buried under sawdust, ice-blocks harvested in the middle of winter could last through the hot summer months.
