HISTORY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS ZOOM PRESENTATION

  • Anoka County Historical Society 2135 Third Ave N Anoka, MN 55303 United States (map)

The history of Columbia Heights is unique, transforming from rural to urban and blurring the lines between where Hennepin County ends and Anoka County starts. Sara Given, from the Anoka County Historical Society, shares the stories and history of Columbia Heights. She will focus on its beginnings, the ways in which it drew new residents, and why a quirk of timing meant there is an entire city in the middle of it. To register, click here.

This is the Municipal On Off Sale Liquor Store that used to be on the east side of Central Avenue in Columbia Heights, between 40th Avenue and 41st Avenue, near the Band Box (burger joint). The Nelson parents worked there part time, cleaning the lounge after it closed for the night. Steve Nelson has memories of it closing up early on Christmas Eve and his parents picking him and his sisters up to go downtown to look at the Christmas decorations. (Image ID 2019.1843.021)
